Notes for WILLIAM JOHN FORE MORGAN:

Thought to have been named "John Fore" after a member of the family of Dr. Augustine P. Fore, a prominent physician residing in Jefferson Co., Tennessee, northeast of Knoxville.

William John Fore Morgan was raised primarily by his 14-year old sister, Susan Morgan following his father's death c. 1826.

He was indentured to Parson William Gannaway Brownlow, who three years later, on May 16, 1839, entered the newpaper publishing business.  After two and a half years of labor as an apprentice and master printer, he lifted his indentureship on December 8, 1842, the date of his maturity.

The following spring, he left Jonesboro, Tennessee and walked over 800 miles to the home of his sister, Eliza (Mrs. Robert W. Walker) near Washington, Hempstead County, Arkansas.  Here he taught school for a while at Mrs. Trimble's Washington Female Institute and later worked as a printer on William Etter's newspaper, the Washington Telegraph.

On June 13, 1845 he married Sarah Ann Starr Trimble, the seventeen year old daughter of Judge William Trimble and Lunetta Stuart of Hempstead County, Arkansas.  In late November 1846, with Texas now a state of the Union, he and Sarah moved with Judge Trimble and his family to Clarksville, Red River County, Texas.  Here he worked as a foreman on Charles De Morse's newspaper, The Northern Standard.

On August 11, 1847, William and Judge Trimble inaugurated a Whig newspaper, The Western Star.  In 1850, William moved the newspaper to Paris, Lamar County, Texas.  He sold the paper in 1852 and returned to Clarksville and his foremanship at the Nothern Standard.

In mid-October, he moved his family to Jefferson, Marion County, Texas.  Twenty-four days later, on January 10, 1857, he, with Jo Nimmo and D. S. McKay as editors, inaugurated the Eastern Texas Gazette, which began a long and par excellence career as a commercial printer and newspaper publisher in Jefferson, Texas.

On December 1, 1890, his wife, Sarah, died and was buried.  Less than seven weeks later, on January 17, 1891, his printing shop was destroyed by fire, and on September 7, 1891 his house burned down.  Afterwards, he went to Waco, McLennan County, Texas to be among some of his children.  While on a visit with his daughter, Sudie C. Smith, near Box Elder, Red River County, Texas, William died on June 26, 1897 and was buried in the church cemetery in Box Elder.
